Basilica of San Domenico, Siena

The Basilica of San Domenico (also known as Basilica Cateriniana) is located in Siena, Tuscany, Italy. The church was begun in 1226-1265 but was enlarged in the 14th century resulting in the Gothic appearance it has today. Aspects of the Gothic structure were destroyed by fires and military occupation. The interior is on the Egyptian cross plan with a huge nave covered by trusses and a transept featuring high chapels.

We were fortunate enough to attend a mass in one of the small chapels behind the Cappella di Santa Caterina, also known as the Chapel of St. Catherine. Monsignor Mike and Father Dave conducted the mass solely for our small group of 38. St. Catherine's head and thumb are housed in the altar of St. Catherine's chapel. St. Catherine's main shrine is down the hill in her family home, and the rest of her body is in a tomb in Santa Maria Sopra Minerva in Rome.

The following pictures are of the exterior and interior of Basilica Cateriniana. Unfortunately, I did not get any pictures in the chapel where we attended mass.
